Hiking in the Swiss Alps (Engadine) July 2008
Living, Food and
Walking:
We took a break from scuba and went hiking in the Engadine, or the Garden of the
River Inn. The Engadine valley has a series of towns along the river, flanked by
Swiss alps, and just beyond them the Italian Alps. The trip was a guided tour
run by Ryder-Walker, a US outfit. We were a group of 13 hikers, plus two guides.
The guided trip is a one-stop shop item: R-W organizes and books Swiss rail
passes that are valid for all rail travel after we land up in Switzerland, all
hotels - we stayed in four over seven nights -- which include breakfast and
dinners. We did the Engadine summit series -- six days of hiking, among which we
climb to the summit of local peaks (called Piz) on three days. The sights are
good, the hotels comfortable, the dinners good; the curious traveler will surely
try the local lactose-based drink Rivella, although we stuck to the safer
choice, Italian wine with dinners. I've included a brief sketch of the treks,
day by day, along with the two maps below. To see the images of the trip, just

my tiny Canon G7.
