Underwater Images Bali, July 2009

Living, Food and Diving:
Mola Mola season in Bali begins late July, so we were expecting to hang out in the cold waters off Nusa Penida on this trip. Our friendd Alex had suggested trying the dive resort Scuba Searaya , and a couple of emails set up the bookings and price. The resort was built and is run by a Swiss diver, Patrick, a friendly man who spends much time on the resort making sure each blade of grass (and there is a lot) is the right length, etc. Rooms are basic and comfortable, the staff are friendly and efficient (especially since the resort had few guests during our stay).

The food:
There's little else in the neighboring area, so all dining was at the resort. The kitchen is operated by local staff, there is a small, but excellent menu including local, western and Indian dishes, the latter being sourced from Kuta; I had lamb curry several times. We also used our usual trick of getting the sausage dinner served with local red chilis -- very nice. Overall, food at Seraya handily beats what we ate at Mimpi (though that was few years ago).

The diving
We did 17 dives over 6 days, as below. Travel times in Bali are long, so we did not do Secret bay or Menjangan; the day trip to Puri Jati also could have been avoided, in my opinion -- it's pretty barren as of now. However, we met Graham Abbott at Seraya, who says now the area off PJ has been declared a marine preserve and so he expects good diving there in a year or so. The resort has a fairly long reef area, so one can make two or three different dives here, depending on whether we go left or right. Nice macro on each side.
Day 1. Liberty wreck, Tulamben drop off, Seraya secrets
Day 2. Nusa Penida: Crystal Bay x2 [saw Mola Mola's on both dives]
Day 3. Nusa Penida Crystal Bay, Padang Bai Reef, Padang Bai wreck (the wreck area is a better dive).
Day 4. Liberty wreck, Paradise reef, Seraya secrets
Day 5. Puri Jati x 2, Seraya house reef
Day 6. Liberty wreck, Seraya secrets left, Amed area

About the photos
Kitty's S80 housing has occasional sticky buttons, but she got a few good shots; I'm still using my Canon G7 in its Canon WP-DC11 housing plus an Inon Z220s strobe on slave. The thumbnails below are linked to larger photos. Most of the photos are just cropped and reduced for the webpage, with minor editing in PSE 7.0. Each photo is max 1000pixel wide and/or 800pixel high.
